Exploring Cultural Exchange
Asian Influence on New England Design
In honor of Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month (May), this month's article discusses Asian influence on New England design, which has quietly shaped the region’s homes, gardens, and artistic sensibilities for more than a century. While New England is often associated with colonial architecture, weathered shingles, and maritime traditions, many designers have incorporated Asian aesthetics to create spaces that feel balanced, peaceful, and deeply connected to nature.
One of the strongest influences comes from Japanese design philosophy. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, American artists and architects became fascinated with Japanese craftsmanship after international trade and exhibitions introduced Japanese art to Western audiences. In New England, this influence appeared in the growing popularity of minimalist interiors, natural wood finishes, and carefully arranged gardens. Rather than filling rooms with heavy ornamentation, designers embraced simplicity and intentionality. Sliding screens, low-profile furniture, and open layouts reflected the Japanese principle that empty space can be just as impactful as decoration.
Gardens throughout New England also reveal Asian inspiration. Japanese-style rock gardens, koi ponds, and curved pathways became popular additions to estates and public parks in states like Massachusetts and Connecticut. These landscapes emphasized harmony with the environment instead of dominating it. The use of stone lanterns, bamboo, and asymmetrical plant arrangements introduced a softer, more meditative atmosphere to traditional New England properties.
Chinese artistic traditions have also influenced regional design, particularly through decorative arts and interior details. Blue-and-white porcelain, lacquered furniture, and silk textiles became prized elements in affluent New England homes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through maritime trade routes. Salem and Boston merchants imported Chinese goods that reflected both luxury and global curiosity. Over time, these imported styles blended with local craftsmanship, creating interiors that combined New England's traditional restraint with Asian elegance.
Today, contemporary New England designers continue to draw from Asian traditions in modern ways. Scandinavian minimalism, which already shares similarities with Japanese aesthetics, often merges seamlessly with classic New England architecture. Homes may feature neutral palettes, natural light, indoor plants, and multifunctional spaces inspired by Zen principles. Sustainable design practices, another value central to many Asian traditions, have also become increasingly important in the region’s architecture and landscaping.
The influence of Asian design on New England is ultimately a story of cultural exchange. Rather than replacing local traditions, Asian aesthetics have expanded them, encouraging designers to value simplicity, craftsmanship, and a stronger relationship with nature. The result is a regional style that feels both timeless and globally connected.
